Book Review - Pocket Mountains

This is the second batch of three books from this excellent publisher. The books are convenient, innovative and well illustrated.

It is hard not be impressed by these books especially with a cover price of £5.99 Even if many of the walks are beyond your capabilities, each volume provides excellent background information on the areas and the walks themselves are inspirational.

The Islands

Covering 40 circular hill routes on Skye and many other islands off the wset coast of Scotland, this book follows the excellent standards already set by the publisher. There are some "big" routes on the Skye Cuillin and the less frequented Cuillin on Rum. Have I got a favourite walk? No - just wished I had the time to do them all but I'd love to try the scramble on Eigg ....

Central Highlands

Besides a good selection of popular hills, there is also an abundance of less well walked summits often by interesting routes. Some walks are best undertaken using a bike to speed access to and from the hill. A hill that has been promoted on my tick list is The Devil's Ridge in the Mamores - the description is superb - all I need is the time!

West Highland

The coverage is again superb with plenty of interest on every page.Superb illustrations that reflect the true character of the hills backed by walk descriptions that are not overloaded with detail. If you need a note of every stile and wall then this serioes is not for you. If you are an intelligent walker with mountain skills then get the lot. You will have enough to keep you busy for years to come. Favourite walk has got to be something from Glen Affric ... wonderful stuff.
