Book Review - The National Trails by Paddy Dillon

This new release from the Cicerone stable covers the nineteen official long distance footpaths, or national trails, in England, Wales and Scotland.

A larger format than most books published by Cicerone, this excellent book runs to some 250 pages and is produced in full colour. The quality of illustrations is generally of a high standard and care has obviously been taken to ensure they capture the spirit if the featured trails.

Each National Trail is dealt with in a similar way. The start includes basic information including start and end of each trail, the length and a list of highlights. Following on from this is an overview of the Trail. This leads very nicely into the route which is described in line with a suggested number of days. To finish off each a range of general information is provided including detailed guides, access to start and end and other sources of general information.

Verdict : a useful book to have on your library shelves if you have an interest in these National Trails. Perhaps not detailed enough to take on a trip but still a very good basic reference to start your planning and get you in mood to start doing some walking!

The National Trails by Paddy Dillon. Price £16.99.
