Most British Stately homes, like Shugborough (near Stafford) pictured above, are surrounded by contrived parkland dominated by large mature trees. Examples of long-term investment in their surroundings, the landed gentry rarely saw the results of their efforts and the designers must be congratulated on their ability to imagine how the scene would look when maturity was reached.
