Gower Peninsula Walking Guide

The Gower or the Gower Peninsula is projects west into the Bristol Channel. Part of the City and County of Swansea, the Gower became the first area in the United Kingdom to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956.

For walkers the recently opened Wales Coast Path provides a well-signed artery from which to explore the coastal and rural landscapes. A network of field paths provides many options for circular walks which are never to demanding in the rolling countryside.

Approximately 70 square miles in area, the Gower Peninsula is known for its scenic coast. It is a popular destination for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. In recent years it has built a reputation for its excellent surfing. The Gower Peninsula stretches from the Loughor Estuary in the north and to Swansea Bay in the east. The Beacon at Rhossili Down at 193 metres (633 ft) is the highest point and overlooks Rhossili Bay. The southern coast consists of a series of rocky or sandy bays with a number of excellent beaches.
