This easy seven mile circular Warwickshire walk combines the delights of both town and country taking in the historic Roman town of Alcester together with some lovely riverside paths, country lanes and gentle farmland. It is mostly flat and very dog friendly. There is also the chance to visit Coughton Court, a very attractive National Trust property. The first part of the walk incorporates a short section of the Millennium Way, where you will be guided by the distinctive black Millennium Way waymarkers.

A - Our walk starts at the Throckmorton Arms at Coughton, just north of Alcester on the A435. With your back to the front entrance of the pub, go R down the main A435 continuing past Coughton Lodge. From here you will have a nice view of Coughton Court over to your left. You are now on the Millennium Way . Go past Sambourne Lane then turn R down Coughton Lane just past the post box. Stay along Coughton Lane for just under a mile and at the T junction turn R on the B4090. Go approx 30 paces then go L through hedge gap along the marked bridleway where you will see a black Millennium Way waymarker. Go with hedge L and where the hedge finishes ( ignore footbridge to the right ) go 1/4 L to the waypost to turn L into next field and continue along with hedge L. ( Here we have left the Millennium Way.)

B - You will eventually cross a small ford into a large field. Go 1/2 R and continue forward keeping wide ditch on your R. (Depending on time of year, there may be a small brook running in the ditch, known as Spittle Brook.) Continue with ditch R crossing dip in corner of field into next field, again to continue with wide ditch on R and Coldcomfort Wood 200 yards on far R. Pass through hedge gap and stay on same line with ditch R. At the end of field where you arrive at a hedge directly ahead, turn R along track for a few yards to find corner waypost. Here we turn L to join The Monarch's Way and stay along with hedge and trees L. The ditch and small brook are now on your L. Stay along the partly surfaced track to reach a T - junction. Here you will see Coldcomfort Farm on the far R. Go L at this T - junction walking away from the farm past the bench on the L and continue along the lane towards a main road. Go past Allimore house on your L and just before meeting the main road take the incline on R to reach and then cross the bridge over the main road.

C - Once over the bridge stay ahead into Allimore Lane and continue along past The Field House crossing bridge over disused railway line to enter the outskirts of Alcester. Go over the crossroads into Seggs Lane and continue ahead to pass the Fire Station on your L to reach a roundabout. Cross over the roundabout into Swan Street and just past the pedestrian traffic lights turn L into High Street.

D - Continue along the high street to pass around St. Nicholas Parish Church on your L and then pass left by the ancient Alcester War Memorial Town Hall. (There a plaque on the wall of historical interest.) Continue into Henley Street with the road soon bearing R to become Kinwarton Road. Cross the bridge over River Arrow and 30 yards before Gunnings Road turn L along narrow track to pass The Grieg. Continue along between hedges and keep River Arrow on your L. Stay along the riverside path with river L passing by the children's play area and sports pitches. At the end of the sports field bear slightly L staying along the track with river L. Go past picnic tables and at surfaced track go R for 50 yards then take waymarked footpath L to go through area of woodland. Stay ahead on narrow track to emerge at a service road. Go L following waymarker, passing a building R and keeping river L.

E - On reaching a road, cross over and take footpath (just to the L of Arden Court) which continues along the riverside. Emerging into a large field bear L along field edge and 20 paces after reaching the corner of field go L through narrow waymarked gap over stone footbridge and almost immediately L again to follow the footpath along the riverbank. Stay along the narrow woodland track with river L. After a short while you will pass a caravan park L on the other side of the river to emerge back into a field. Go L with river L and pass a small weir continuing with river L. Pass through gated gap and stay ahead under power lines still with river L. Having passed under the power lines bear slightly L to stay with the river. Continue through a further gated gap and stay with river L. After a few yards we leave the river and continue around the edge of field to exit via a metal kissing gate to reach a lane.

F - Go L on lane passing Millford Cottage and then Millford House. After a few yards take the waymarked footpath L. Here we take a metal bridge across the River Arrow and through a metal gate into large field. Continue ahead across field towards the farm buildings in the far distance and take a metal kissing gate to next field. Go 1/2 R to exit this field via metal gate to lane. Cross over lane into Coughton Court entrance, pass by St. Peter's Catholic Church on R, and just before the main Coughton Court building take the bridge L and then R through the pedestrian gate just by the cattle grid. Continue forward through a metal kissing gate and stay ahead towards the main road. Here you can enjoy an unfettered view of the lovely Coughton Court behind you. Exit to the main A435 road via a kissing gate and turn R to eventually arrive back at the Throckmorton Arms. (Should the entrance to Coughton Court be closed , you can as an alternative route take the lane down to the main road instead of taking the route through the grounds, and then go R along the A435 to arrive back at the pub. )
