Walk Route Description

The story of the two churches of St Peter in Aubourn spans 600 years. The earlier church, standing in the grounds of Auborn Hall, was erected in about 1200 on the site of an earlier wood and stone structure recorded in Doomsday. In 1862, most of the building was demolished and the stone incorporated in the building of a new, joint parish church mid-way between Aubourn and Haddington. In less than 100 years the Victorian building, also dedicated to St. Peter had deteriorated to the point that it was deemed unsafe and was partly demolished, leaving just the steeple standing beside the road to Haddington. The congregation moved back into the original church which had been restored in 1933.

1 - From the Stepping Out car park, turn right heading into Haddington village until you meet the junction with Bridge Road.

2 - Turn right along Bridge Road and follow this road until you have crossed over the River Witham. Immediately after the bridge you will see a public footpath on the opposite of the road pointing left across green pasture. Take this path, keeping the hedgerow to your right.

3 - Remain on the path following the hedgerow until you emerge into the grounds of Aubourn Hall. Walk in front of the Hall and continue straight on to the small church of St Peters.

4 - Enter the churchyard and look for a footpath leading off to the left.

5 - Take the path and follow it until you reach the banks of the River Witham and turn right keeping the river on your left. Look out for a waymarker directing you right back over the bank and along the footpath away from the river.

6 - Follow this footpath towards the road, taking care to stay on the grassed footpath on the bank, not the rough fenced area to its left. Follow this until you rejoin the main road through Aubourn.

7 - Turn right here, heading back into the village until you reach the fork in the road indicating the one way system.

8 - Take the right fork which leads you past the Royal Oak Public House and follow the road until you are heading out of Aubourn and can see the steeple of the Victorian St Peters in front of you.

9 - Turn right down Bridge Road, back over the River Witham until you see a waymarked public footpath leading off to your left.

10 - Follow this footpath over pasture land, across waymarked bridges to the rough grass area marking the site of medieval earthworks. Cross the pasture until you see a permissive path waymarker pointing right towards the restored medieval dovecote behind which is the car park.

This route is from the Stepping Out series of walks produced by North Kesteven Council.
