The New Forest is a wonderful mix of open heathland, bogs, ancient woodland interspersed with open tracts (lawns), and more recent plantings (Inclosures). This walk takes in examples of all these types of terrain and provides an opportunity to experience all sorts of wildlife: ponies and deer, in the spring primroses and violets, in the autumn fungi, hawks and kestrels over the heathlands and in the woods the birdsong is magnificent; and lots more for those knowledgeable enough and keen-eyed enough to find them. Two suggestions. Summer weekends might be best avoided because of heavy traffic on the A35 which has to be crossed once. And as one who normally is quite happy with an OS Landranger map in most areas in England and Wales, I would say the larger scale Explorer is essential for walking in the Forest (only at this scale do you get all the tracks shown) and a compass useful where a well defined track is non-existent or there are too many to choose from.
