Travellers on the A523 Macclesfield to Stockport road will notice the cone shaped building on the hills behind Bollinton. Known as 'White Nancy', the building is worth the visit as it provides wonderful views of the Cheshire plain without a great deal of effort. Although I have quoted grid numbers you should be able to complete the walks without reference to them.

WALK ONE (3.5 miles) - The walk starts from Jackson Lane, Bollington near The Belgrade Hotel and outside Holy Trinity Church with its school-like appearance (grid ref SJ935771). Proceed south up the road passing the Bull's Head. Then left up Redway towards Redway Tavern. At the Tavern take the concrete farm road to the right of the building. This farm road climbs up to a cattle grid prior to descending to a dwelling on the right. Take the right-hand footpath keeping parallel to the drive then go through a gate to pass hen and duck cages.

The clear path ahead provides easy walking as it contours the hill. Look out for a reservoir in the left-hand valley. Pass it and then, at the wall gap and gate **(Grid ref. 944762), take the right-hand path, still keeping in the same general direction. This path gradually climbs to a path alongside a wall with trees on your right. Eventually you will come to a path 'Y' junction (Grid ref 944754). Turn right to double back up the hill through a small disused quarry. The path is very clear and takes you to the ridge named 'The Saddle of Kerridge' from where you will be rewarded with unrestricted views including Manchester and Woodford Aerodromes, the Telescope at Jodrell Bank, the distant Cheshire Hills near Frodsham but sadly the foreground is spoiled by the roofs of Macclesfield Industrial Estate.

Keeping the wall on you left the path travels along the whole ridge (look out for the unique colourful plaques) passing a couple of quarries to eventually reach the cone -shaped 'White Nancy' thought to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo but reading the numerous inscriptions scratched on it also commemorates more recent events.

Descend from White Nancy via the steps on the left to the concrete farm road. Then go left down hill to Redway Tavern and back to the start.

WALK TWO (4.5 miles) - Follow walk one as described above to the wall gap and gate ** just after the reservoir in the valley. From here take the lower path leading to a stile. The path keeps to the right wall over two more stiles/gates to a bridleway. Follow the wet bridleway left between walls dropping to a stream then bearing left up to the road (Grid ref. 947757).

Turn left along the road then right at the narrow Berristal Road that services the Water Works at Lamaload Reservoir. Ignore the footpath on the right climbing up the bank, instead keeping to the road. Turn sharp right at the end of the woods. The path at first keeps to the edge of the woods then bears right through the woods to the top of the low ridge then descends the field ahead to the road at Brookhouse.

Turn left at the road then right at the first lane. Take the footpath on the right at the corner. On reaching the Y footpath junction follow the left path climbing up through the small quarry to 'The Saddle of Kerridge Ridge' then continue with the first walk.
