Your Favourite Walk Competition

Each month there will be a prize for the best short walk submitted to Walking Britain. Walks should be less than 6 miles (10 km) in length and contain varied content to keep the walker interested.

In addition if the winning walk is more than six miles (10 kilometres) from other walks on the Walking Britain web site then a bonus prize will also be awarded. For a further bonus prize, the winner must be from a county not covered by WB at the start of that month.

The main prize for the competition closing 30th April 2008 is a mixed pack of three walking books that have been publihsed recently. Total Value £30+

Ideas

Walks should be based around some interesting content. This might be

- scenic interest like a beautiful valley or a viewpoint
- a summit of a hill or mountain
- a nature reserve or wildlife interest
- historic buildings such as churches and castles
- interesting villages, towns or cities
- canals or industrial heritage
- or any other topics that you feel might be of interest to site visitors

Closing dates

The competition will operate monthly with the first competition closing on 31st December 2007. Subsequent competitions will close at the end of each month – e.g. 31st January 2008, 29th February 2008, etc. Unless instructed otherwise, all entries will be entered into the competition running on the day of receipt of the submitted walk.

Choosing a Winner

The entries will be judged by the editor and the decision will be based on an overall assessment of each walk including content, description and images. One of the key tests to check accuracy, will be to see if the editor can follow the route on a map using the route description provided.

Format Guidelines

A detailed walk description preferably in word format. The route should enable the reader to follow the walk by using the appropriate Ordnance Survey 1:25000 map. Please be careful to ensure that all details are correct. The use of grid references may improve the accuracy and usability of your description. If you wish you can add information about what is seen during the walk. Please remember to identify any difficult sections of the walk and include some notes about locating the start, parking, public transport, toilets and refreshments if appropriate.

One or more pictures with informative captions. It is unlikely that more than 12 images are required. The images should illustrate the character of the walk and include key features seen during the route. The images should be jpeg, bitmap or tiff format and be larger than 600 pixels wide for landscape format or a minumum of 400 pixels high for portrait format images. When sending images, please do not compress jpegs too much.

Give details of the relevant OS maps that could be used to complete the walk. This includes the sheet number of the Landranger 1:50000 map and the number of the Explorer 1:25000 sheet. If more than one map at either scale is needed then please give all the relevant sheet numbers.

As an optional addition an outline route map might be useful. This can either be hand drawn or use one of the familiar mapping programmes now available. Alternatively you can provide GPS data.

How to submit your entry

Send your entry as attachments by email. If you wish to send more than 3 images then please send additional images at the rate of three per additional email. Alternatively you may copy files to a cd and send by post.
