Markyate and Flamstead are two Hertfordshire villages which lie on the old Roman Watling Street, later the basis of the A5. Markyate being halfway between St Albans and Dunstable owed its erstwhile prosperity to its facilities for refreshing travellers. Flamstead was a market town from the Middle Ages. Now that they are bypassed by the A5 they have become quiet oases with many historical buildings remaining. This circular walk all through wide open country goes out from Flamstead and through a landscape fashioned by Capability Brown and returns from Markyate more directly by a route overlooking the Ver valley. Suggested Maps It is recommended you take a map with you when following a walk route. The preferred scale is 1:25000 used by the Explorer series.
