This rural walk through fields and woods offers an accessible experience of the Worcestershire countryside, away from the popular tourist traps. The starting and finishing point is the very walker friendly New Inn walkers car park on the B4196 near Shrawley, SO799663. The pub boasts "dirty dogs and muddy boots welcome!" What more could you ask for? However the new landlord (2008) now charges £3 for parking if you don't use his pub.
Having parked, turn right out of the car park and walk up the lane towards Bonefields Farm until the tarmac turns into unmade road. A short distance on the left a fingerpost indicates the right of way over a stile into a field. With no visible path on the ground, turn right after about a hundred metres and look for a kissing gate in the left hand corner of the field. Go through this and then on to another kissing gate opposite. Continue across another field to a stile with a marker indicating the way to Glasshampton Monastery. Continue across this field and the next to reach a small wood on the right with a sharp corner jutting into the field. After turning the corner, a stile comes into sight. Cross this and turn immediately left, keeping the hedge close to the left, until a metal gate is reached. Take the downhill path to the right, heading towards a wood. At the bottom of the hill, go past a concealed, algae covered pool slightly up and right through woods and emerge at a bridlepath. Turn right past the murky Nutnell Pool and follow this bridlepath Northwards through a field and onto the approach road to Glasshampton Monastery. Continue left to approach the Monastery and just before reaching it, turn right along a bridlepath descending across a field and disappearing into another wood. The tower of Astley Church should be on the skyline in front of you as you descend to the wood. Enter the thick woodland and follow the path over the now somewhat unfittingly named New Bridge. Take a look at the curtain veil of ivy dangling from the bridge. Head slightly left from the bridge, then right uphill in a sunken bridlepath with a large tree spanning the way, seemingly growing out of solid sandstone. At the end of the path, go through a metal gate and take the opportunity to look at Astley Church on the left, another typical example of the red sandstone churches in the area. Retrace to the metal gate and cross a stile with three public footpath markers indicated. Follow the middle route across a field aiming for a gap in the hedge opposite. Continue along the next field with the hedge to your right. Before reaching Solhampton Farm, turn right along an enclosed bridlepath. Continue along this path, ignoring another route climbing uphill to the right. Reaching a brook, turn left and follow back to the B4196 main road. Turn right along the main road and return to the New Inn and car park. Suggested Maps It is recommended you take a map with you when following a walk route. The preferred scale is 1:25000 used by the Explorer series.
Note : If two maps are listed at the same scale then either (a) both are required for full coverage of the route or (b) the route is covered on both maps.
