Walk Route Description

This Herefordshire walk explores the pleasant countryside to the west of Moreton-on-Lugg. The start is in the centre of the village where you can park on road with consideration near the church (grid ref. SO504456). With the church to your back turn left, walk to the A49 main road, cross and take the tarmacked path to the campsite. Pass through the gate and make for the gap in the hedge ahead. Then walk to the stile on the right hand side of the trees (grid ref. SO495453).

The path follows the right hand edge of the next field, passing under power lines and leading you to the stile immediately on the right. Following the left edge, you go through an awkward gate. Keep left and make for the right hand side of the farmhouse ahead. Cross the stile and stay on the left side of the field. The next stile is at SO483451, and it is followed at SO488551 by one which is often difficult to negotiate due to brambles. The next 50 yards crosses ground covered in brambles - make your way very carefully to the willow and then climb to the stile in the corner (SO487449).

The difficult part of this walk is now behind you. Turn right and walk downhill for about two hundred yards, then take the steps on the left just before the 40mph repeater sign (grid ref. SO487451). At the bottom corner ahead of you in this field there is a stile in the hedge on the right just before the sheep fold - cross it, turn sharp left, pass the pond and make for Burghill church. Cross the stile by the gate and head off at 1 o/c, making for the church. Go through the gate on to the lane, turn left and then take the signed path into the churchyard. As you pass the entrance to the church look straight ahead for the kissing gate by the war memorial and the path which takes you to Tillington.

After about 100 yards turn right along the track and then after another 50 yards turn left, following the well waymarked signs to the pond via a private garden. Here you negotiate the stile (grid ref. SO477446). Follow the left hand field edge which soon joins a very obvious track which you simply follow to where it turns sharply left (grid ref. SO470452). Here you take the stile and follow the right hand edge of the field. Immediately after passing the bungalows cross the stile in the hedge on your right and then follow the left hand edge to the lane in Tillington.

You may wish to visit the very agreeable Bell Inn (grid ref. SO464453) in which case you turn left, then right, then left again. Otherwise turn right and walk ahead along the lane to the grounds of Tillington Lodge Farm. Passing through these you come to a mountainboard slope where the bridleway moves in from the right and passes through a small meadow to a bridlegate. After 1/4 mile there's another gate. Follow the left hand edge of the field - the path soon turns sharply uphill, arriving at a T junction where you go through the gate on the left. Arriving quickly at a track you turn left and descend to the main road.

Turning right, you walk for about 250 yards to the old chapel and bus stop on the left. Go through the gate, pass down through the woods and then make for the far left hand corner where you will find a waymarker post (grid ref. SO489460). Follow the left edge of the next field and at the corner, where the waymarker will undoubtedly be obscured by hawthorn for most of the year turn left over the ditch (grid ref. SO489465), then immediately right, following the ditch on your right.

At grid ref. SO489466 cross the bridge, then aim for the gate in the far right hand corner. At grid ref. SO489468 the path splits and you should take the stile on the right and then follow the left hand field edge as far as the metalled lane (grid ref. SO492470). Cross this and pass through the gate and stile opposite, following the left hand edge of the field. At the next field keep left, passing a metal gate with a stile and bridge a few yards further on at grid ref. SO496471. From here follow the power lines to the field corner where the houses and the final stile can be seen. This group of houses is called The Marsh. Walk to the end of the stub lane, turn right and walk the ½ mile back along the A49 to Moreton.
