Above Watersmeet the junction of the two valleys is clearly seen. It was here in August 1952 after extensive rain, that the two swollen rivers joined and caused extensive damage and loss of life further downstream in Lynmouth. The steep sided valleys meant there was nowhere for the excess water to escape and added to the scale of the tragedy.
