Fly Agaric in the woods around Raven Crag

Fly Agaric - In late September, when these pictures were taken, the woods around Raven Crag and the Benn are full of fungi. This is Fly Agaric - a deadly toadstool which was mashed with water in the Middle Ages to produce an insecticide which was painted on cottage walls!

Photographer : John Paterson

Walk : Raven Crag, the Benn & Shoulthwaite Gill near Thirlmere
