Nant Francon is the valley far below and was photographed near the summit of Y Garn. Flanked by high mountains on either side, this valley exhibits the classic u-shape produced as a result of glaciation. Across the valley can be seen the steep slopes of Pen-yr Ole Wen with other peaks of the Carneddau beyond.
