Bowfell
Walking Guide and Walks

Bow Fell is a fine mountain that dominates the western end of Mickleden in the Lake District. Alfred Wainwright notes that it is "a favourite of all fell fellwalkers" and on busy days it's hard to disagree with this point of view! The two other summits in this group are Crinkle Crags (which is often completed with Bow Fell) and Pike of Blisco, which occupies a solitary position above Oxendale.

The three main approaches to Bow Fell are via The Band from Great Langdale, from Three Shire Stone at the top of the Wrynose Pass, and the longer and much quieter route from the south at Cockley Beck. As mentioned previously Crinkle Crags is often combined with Bow Fell and rather surprisingly is rarely the sole objective of a Lakeland fell walk despite a summit that is worth detailed exploration. Although much has been written about the 'bad step' encountered when approaching the summit from the south, walkers should not be discouraged as there is an easy way to avoid this barrier to less agile walkers.

Pike of Blisco is a fine summit and worthy of climbing as a sole objective for the day offering some wonderful views as a reward for your efforts. A choice of ascent routes are on offer from Wrynose Pass or from Great Langdale plus a much quieter route from Blea Tarn.
