The Blithfield Estate is located near Rugeley and provides a variety of terrain in the immediate area on the northern shores of Blithfield Reservoir, which was opened in 1953. The area was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1987 in recognition of its importance as a wildfowl habitat. The area is owned by South Staffs Water and they have provided a serried of permissive walks and viewing facilities so that visitors can see and enjoy the huge range of wildlife that is to be found.

The start is the car park (grid ref. SK054260) reached from Newton Hurst Lane. Information boards provided including details of the various walks that are available. Further information is available on the Blithfield Walks website.

The route taken was to walk back towards the entrance car park and follow the marked footpath through woodland (Blue Route). The path undulates between the trees and eventually reaches the tarmac access drive. Turn right along this drive and then follow the Yellow Route. After crossing a meadow you continue through woodland and down to the shores of Blithfield Reservoir. There are a number of hides where you can watch the extensive birdlife.

Stay on the Yellow Route and continue along the shoreline with extensive views across the reservoir. The path leads you back to the point where you started the yellow route. Continue along the access drive for a short way and take the Blue Route on your left. This leads through woodland with the reservoir to your right back to the start. You can extend the walk by following the Red Route.
