Walk Route Description

Circular walk from Alconbury Weston exploring the countryside lying to the west of the village. The route follows paths, bridleways and country lanes passing through the village of Buckworth with its fine 13th century parish church.

The walk starts from Hammerton Road in Alconbury Weston where roadside parking is available without inconveniencing residents (grid ref. TL177770). After parking walk along the road with a stream on your right. Continue to a T-junction in the centre of the village. Turn left up Vinegar Hill. And after 100 metres, turn right at a fingerpost onto a grassy track. Continue into a field and follow the path beside a hedge on your left to a kissing gate on the left. The path follows the right-hand side of the field and continue to a path junction. Turn right and reaching a hedge turn right again with a hedge on your right over Cade's Hill. Exit the field and continue ahead for 120 metres and turn right to follow path across the field. Continue to a tarmac lane (the Maltings) and turn left and continue to Alconbury Church (grid ref. TL185762).

Enter the churchyard, follow the path to the left of the church and continue to a lane. Just before a small cottage on the right, turn right through a gate by a fingerpost. Continue to reach North Road. Turn right and then left at a fingerpost. The path passes Crow Farm on your right and continues across a large field to gap in the hedge into the next field. Keep to the right-hand edge, cross a footbridge and entre a small wood. Follow the path through the trees. Emerge from the trees at a kissing gate continue beside a ditch to a lane (grid ref. TL168756).

Turn left along the lane and when the lane bends right continue ahead by a fingerpost. Follow the grassy bridleway between trees to reach a track. Turn right and continue to a lane. Turn left and then almost immediately right onto the continuing bridleway. After a kilometre you reach a pair of barns. Turn left in front of the barns and continue to a road near Manor Lodge (grid ref. TL148764). Turn right and continue ahead into Buckworth. Follow the road as it bends left and then right to pass All Saints' Church, which is worth visiting if you have time. Continue past the church to a T-junction and turn right (signed to Alconbury Weston).

Just past the entrance to Home Farm bear left off the road across grass at a fingerpost. Keep the barns on your left and then turn right onto a diagonal path across a large field. Continue to a lane and turn left. Reaching a T-junction, cross to the bridleway opposite to the left of a house (Brickyard Farm). Pass through a gate and follow left-hand edge of a field. Continue into next field and turn right at a way post with a hedge on your right. Follow the path through fields via gates, a stile and finally a footbridge to exit onto Hammerton Road in Alconbury Weston. Turn right back to the start.
