This South Staffordshire walk uses bridleways, footpaths and canal towpaths to explore some of the features in this part of the County. As an extension it is possible to visit Chillington Hall but please note that opening times are limited. The start is a small car park (Grid ref. SJ882075) located on Park Lane to the south of Brewood (pronounced Brood locally).

After parking, walk east through the wood on the same side of Park Lane as you have parked. The wood is part of "Lower Avenue" and you will see how it looked later in the walk. After crossing the bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal, complete with its very nice balustrade, bear right and follow the path and steps down to the canal towpath. Do not go under the bridge but follow the towpath for about a mile until you reach the second bridge. It is worth noting that the bridge abutments have cast iron plates to protect the brickwork from the towing ropes. You can see how much they have worn by the deep groves cut into the metal.

Go under the third bridge (BRIDGE NO. 7) and climb up to the bridleway, which is part of the Monarch's Way long distance footpath. Turn left onto the bridleway and go over the bridge. The bridleway stays to the right of the field to reach an opening (Grid ref. SJ886059). Go through the opening and continue along the side of the next field keeping the hedge to your left. At the top of the field you reach a track. Turn right and walk to a junction with Park Lane (Grid ref. SJ882066). Turn left and follow the lane to a further junction.

Cross the road and follow the signed bridleway along Chillington Street. You pass some nice cottages on this section before reaching a lane (Grid ref. SJ867066). Turn right along the lane with the grounds of Chillington Hall on your left. Reaching a road junction adjacent to the entrance to the Hall turn right along the lane that runs parallel to "Upper Avenue". There is a good view along the length of this approach to the Hall opposite the entrance to the Hall and you can see how much "Lower Avenue" has deteriorated over the years.

Continue along the lane for approximately 800 metres to where the Staffordshire Way crosses the lane (Grid ref. SJ874071). Turn left here onto this path, crossing "Upper Avenue" and follow it towards Brewood. Reaching the canal there is the option of continuing into the village centre where there is a range of local amenities. Cross the canal and take the path on the right that leads down to the towpath. Continue along the canal to the second bridge. Go under the bridge, climb the steps on your left and walk over the bridge. Continue along the woods of "Lower Avenue" back to the start.
