This is another walk in the Loxley valley - this time starting on the north side of the valley at Wadsley and Loxley Commons, crossing the river at the old Malin Bridge mill, continuing westwards along the top of the south side of the valley and crossing back over the river below the Damflask reservoir.
Park in the car park at grid ref. SK318908 and take the main path into Wadsley Common - staying on the south of the common ground. Take the first path off on the left that leaves the common. It initially crosses fields then becomes a track and then it is Stour Lane. Pass the Rose & Crown pub (worth a visit at the end of the walk) and then prepare for some urban walking to get down to the river Loxley.
Turn right on Luke Lane, right again onto Aldene Road then left onto Bland Lane. This becomes a path that goes around the back of Loxley House. Take the path off on the left that comes down to Ben Lane. It is possible to walk up the road to have a look at the front of Loxley House - now private flats - before going back along Ben Lane and taking the first path off on the left across the open space to Studfield Hill. You can see into the Malin Bridge end of the Loxley valley at this point.
Cross over Studfield Hill then go through the trees to Loxley Road and take the track, slightly to your left that leads down to the end of Low Matlock Lane. Bear left down to the river and follow the river path all the way into Malin Bridge. You pass the Wisewood Forge Weir and the pond - now next to a large retirement home estate. At Mailin Bridge go right over the river, past the old mill then right up Stannington Road. Just before the Anvil pub turn right up Wood Lane then right again up Myers Grove Road.
After just under half a mile bear right onto Greaves Lane which continues along the top of the southern side of the valley to the old Robin Hood pub at High Matlock - now residential. There is a steep descent down on the right towards the river at Low Matlock. Before you get to the bridge over the river take the path off through Little Matlock Wood. At this point try to stay close to the river - however the better paths may start to take you back up the valley side.
Come down to Rowel Bridge, cross the road then go up the other side through Beacon Wood. Coming down through the woods opposite the old Dyson ceramics factory the track is churned up to start with by horses and it may be easier to walk through the field to your right. You will eventually come to the Roe Gate track that leads down to the river at Stacey Bank.
Cross the river and turn right going back along the north bank of the river, past the fishery then take Storrs Bridge Lane off on the left past the semi-ruined Claremont House to Loxley Road. Go right then left on path No 52, past another Loxley House, and across Loxley Chase.
Go right onto Loxley Common golf course, across Long Lane and then through Loxley and then Wadsley commons and back to the car park. The profusion of paths at the end can be confusing - but just keep heading east and you will find your way.
