Walk from Cowshill in Upper Weardale exploring the moors north of the village. The route climbs steadily to reach the Durham/Northumberland border and then follows high ground to reach Clevison Currick, a shelter constructed with stones, from where there is an excellent panorama to the high North Pennine summits. The walk then descends into Weardale and follows a short section of the Weardale Way back to the start.

The walk starts from the small car park at Cowshill (grid ref. NY856406). After parking return to the A689 and turn right soon passing the Cowshill Hotel on your right. Head uphill and at the end of the 30-mph speed limit, fork right up a track with adjacent fingerpost. Initially between walls, the bridleway climbs steadily towards Burtree Fell. After 500 metres your reach a cross track (grid ref. NY855411). Walk ahead and continue the climb. Pass the house at Cogley and continue up the bridleway to enter open country. The track becomes less obvious and leads up to the county border (grid ref. NY858431).

Turn left along the fence and continue for 500 metres to reach the B6295 crossing Allendale Common. Cross the road, pass through a small parking area and pass through a gate into open moorland. Ahead you will see small cairn (Rowan's Currick). Cross pathless moor to this cairn. An indistinct path leads along Puddingthorn Edge to Clevison Currick (grid ref. NY839431). Allow time to enjoy the extensive view.

To start the descent, retrace your steps for 150 metres and turn right downhill aiming for a walled track leading to the A689 with a small plantation to the left of the track. The descent is rough underfoot and steep in places. Pass through the gate and follow the walled track down to the main road and turn left. Follow the road for 5500 metres. After crossing a stone bridge, the road swings right and then left. Reaching a fingerpost on the right by metal railings, turn sharp right and follow track down to cross a bridge over the River Wear.

Immediately after crossing the bridge, turn left to join the Weardale Way. Follow waymarked path with the river on your left to the buildings at Low Allers. Do not cross the river here but continue along the river to the next bridge (grid ref. NY852407) and cross to the far bank by a flooded quarry. Continue ahead beside the river to reach a lane in Cowshill (grid ref. NY854406). Cross to road opposite and continue between houses and past the mill to reach the A689. Turn left and then right back to the start.
