This circular walk explores Knole Park and the surrounding woodland. Knole is a former archbishop's palace owned by the National Trust. It is situated within the thousand-acre Knole Park, south-east of Sevenoaks (Kent). It is one of the largest houses in England occupying 4 acres. The house dates from the 15th century and lies within an area of parkland and woodland with a resident population of deer.
The walk starts from the One Tree Hill car park (grid ref. TQ599532). After parking exit the car park and turn left. Walking on the road needs care. After 250 metres fork right off the road opposite a fingerpost at Shepherds Mead. Turn right through a gate. The path climbs gently with trees on your right. Reaching a wide track, turn right and almost immediately fork left to follow a path across a field, across a stile and through trees to a lane (grid ref. TQ549532).
Cross the lane to the gate opposite and enter Knole Park. The path passes through trees to reach a tarmac path after 140 metres. Turn left along the surfaced path, the Chestnut Walk, and continue for a kilometre to a junction. Turn sharp right along the Broad Walk, also surfaced, and continue for just over a kilometre. At the foot of the slope near a golf sign, fork left through trees to reach a high wall. Turn left alongside the wall. At the end of the wall, fork half-right and follow path between bench and waymark. Continue past the Ice House on your left and walk down to a driveway (grid ref. TQ536544) and turn right.
Walk around a bend and fork left at the next junction. After 80 metres turn right off the driveway and follow the path to the top of Echo Mount with extensive views over Knole. Continue down through the car park to the north-western corner of the house. The onward path follows the wall on your right. Pass the café to a footpath post. Fork left over grass for 450 metres. The path crosses the golf course and is waymarked. Cross a pair of tracks to reach a track which comes in from the left.
Turn right and almost immediately fork right towards a waymark following a grassy path past a pond on your right. Continue down through bracken to rejoin the wide track. Turn right and shortly after fork left at waymarked junction. Head uphill on a grassy path between green and golf tee into the trees ahead. Reaching a clearing, veer slightly left to the corner of the wood and follow path along its edge with trees on your left. Drop down into a dip and continue ahead through trees to a gate. Exit Knole Park and walk ahead bearing left at a waymark post. Continue through woodland for 300 metres to reach a clear fork (grid ref. TQ556540).
Bear right. Continue ahead across two roads and continue along a signed Restricted Byway. After passing a house on the right, follow the byway as it bends right. Just before the next house fork left along a grassy track. Continue to the farm buildings and turn right along a track and continue to a road (grid ref. TQ559537). Turn left along the road. When the road bends left walk ahead onto footpath, ignoring the path to the left. After 250 metres you reach a junction. Turn right along a broad track and continue back to the car park.
