A varied Brecon Beacons walk from Ystradfellte exploring the valleys of the Afon Mellte and Nedd Fechan which are noted for their numerous waterfalls and cascades. In places the route requires careful navigation and the relevant 1:25000 OS map is a useful aid. The walk crosses a beautiful rolling landscape and includes pastures, woodland and a moor dotted with limestone outcrops.
The walk starts from the small car park at Ystradfellte (grid ref. SN928124) near the New Inn. After parking, exit the car park and turn right and reaching the road through the village, turn left and almost immediately right (signed Penderyn). Continue past the church on your left and follow the lane across the Afon Mellte. The lane climbs twisting up the hillside. Pass the track leading to Porth yr Ogof farm and take the first stile (with yellow arrow) on the right. The path descends gently past Porth y Ogof Cave which can be reached by a short detour to the right. Continue ahead to a car park and a lane (grid ref. SN928124).
Turn right along the lane and after a few metres turn left onto a bridleway with an adjacent blue topped post. (If time permits you can also visit the waterfalls by taking the path opposite the entrance to the car park.) The bridleway leads across fields to reach a lane after a kilometre (grid ref. SN919116). Bear left and then turn right into a lane signed to Nedd Valley. After 200 metres turn left through a metal farm gate (with no waymark) and follow the track steeply down to Pont Rhyd-y-Cnau bridge. Turn right just before the bridge to follow a path heading north through woodland up the Nedd Fechan Valley. After 500 metres you reach Pwll Du where you climb up to a narrow path with a fence on your right. Care is needed on this section as there is a steep slope down to the river. Continue upstream for a further 500 metres to cross the river (grid ref. SN912126).
Follow track north for just under a kilometre, with a few yellow arrows for guidance, to reach the ruins of Cefn-ucheldref. Continue up to a track and bear right with a plantation on your left. After 350 metre turn right onto a clear track (just before the end of the plantation). Drop down to cross the river and climb up to a lane (grid ref. SN912140). Turn left and after 200 metres turn right through a gate signed to Ystradfellte. Follow bridleway east across rough moorland with limestone outcrops to a gate in a wall corner (grid ref. SN924138). Follow enclosed track down to the car park at Ystradfellte.
