This walk from Ramsholt (Suffolk) explores a section of the River Deben to reach Stomer Point. From here the route turns inland towards Sutton before turning south to pass through Shottisham. Field paths and tracks then lead back to the start passing the isolated All Saints Church (Ramsholt) with its lovely round tower. In season the River Deben is alive with birdlife.

The start is the small public car park at Ramsholt (grid ref. TM309415). After parking exit the car park and walk towards the Ramsholt Arms and the River Deben. Turn right at the fingerpost and follow the path beside the river (on your left). You now have four kilometres of easy walking passing Snottisham Creek and Stonner Point. 300 metres beyond Stonner Point turn left onto a footpath (grid ref. TM294450) leading to Lower Farm. The path turns left and shortly afterwards bears right following a grassy track (past the farm on your right).

The track then runs alongside a reservoir on your right. Reaching a crossroads of tracks (grid ref. TM302452), turn left and continue north to reach a large tree on your right. Bear right here onto a track and continue to a T-junction (grid ref. TM305455). Turn left and follow the track between an avenue of trees to reach Main Road in Sutton (grid ref. TM306464).

Turn right and continue past Plough Inn to take a signed footpath on the left (grid ref. TM306462). Continue straight ahead along this path to exit onto Old Post Office Lane. Continue to the end of the lane and turn right. Continue past Abblitt's Farm (on your left). Immediately past the farm, turn left onto a clear track (Sandy Lane). The lane bends right, passes some houses on the left and reaches a junction (grid ref. TM317460).

Turn right and continue down the track for 800 metres to pass Vale Farm on your right (grid ref. TM320453). Just past Vale Farm take the signed footpath on your right. The path initially goes half left and then bears to the left passing allotments on your right to reach Church Lane in Shottisham (grid ref. TM321448). Turn right and then almost immediately left to follow Church Lane into the centre of the village and The Street with the Sorrel Horse Inn on the junction.

Turn left and then right into Villa Hill (fingerpost). Continue along the track past the last buildings on your right to enter a field. The path follows the field edge (hedge on right) eventually becoming a clear track which leads to the B1083 (grid ref. TM318436) at New Cottages. Cross the B1083 and take the lane opposite (signed to Ramsholt). Continue to where the lane turns sharp left where you turn right onto a sandy track. Continue along the track for just over a kilometre and turn right (grid ref. TM308426) along another track with a strip of woodland on the left.

At the end of this track, you reach a lane with All Saints Church opposite. Cross the lane and follow the path to the left of the three-way fingerpost. Reaching an open grassy area keep right and follow the path as it turns right and then left to cross open ground and saltmarsh to re-join the outward route. Follow the path south to the Ramsholt Arms and retrace your steps back to the start.
