The Isle of Arran is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde. Goatfell dominates the north of the island with its granite summits providing more challenging walks. This walk explores the rolling terrain to the south starting from Brodick which is linked with ferries to the mainland at Ardrossan. The route follows the Arran Coastal Way along the east coast and around Clauchlands Point to the attractive village of Lamlash. From here the walk heads inland through pine forests to Fairy Glen and a gentle descent back to Brodick.
The walk starts from the exit to the ferry port (grid ref. NS022359) with car parking available along the seafront. Exit the port area and turn left along the A841 towards Lamlash. After 250 metres turn left before the post box (signed to Strathwhillan and follow the Arran Coastal Way (ACW) and turn right at a fingerpost just before a gate across the lane. The onward waymarked path crosses fields to join a track near North Corriegills (grid ref. NS035351). The track leads down to the coast where the ACW continues around Clauchlands Point to join a lane. Bear left along the lane and continue into Lamlash enjoying views to Holy Island and across Lamlash Bay.
After a very pleasant two kilometres along the shore, you enter the village. Keep ahead at all junctions to reach the A841 (grid ref. NS031316). Turn right and head uphill following the pavement to reach the edge of the village. At the end of the pavement, join the footpath at a fingerpost (signed to Brodick). The path runs roughly parallel to the road. Pass through the first car park (Cnoc na Dail) and continue to the viewpoint carpark (grid ref. NS018336) some two kilometres after leaving Lamlash.
Follow path from rear of car park which soon swings right. After ghosting the road, the path swings left, crosses two footbridges and exits the trees into a more open landscape. The waymarked path crosses fields and leads to a track (Mid Mayish). Reaching tarmac, continue downhill to a T-junction Turn left along Alma Road and continue down to the A841. Turn right along the seafront to return to the start.
