Walk Route Description

Starting from Bosham, this level walk explores the countryside and marshland beside the inlets and creeks of Chichester Harbour to reach Fishbourne. From here the route crosses farmland back to the start. Points of interest include the Saxon church and harbour in Bosham, and the remains of a Roman Palace in Fishbourne with its outstanding mosaics.

The walk starts from the main pay and display car park in Bosham (grid ref. SU806040). After parking return to the entrance and turn left along Bosham Lane. Continue towards the waterfront and turn left along a walled path just before the last house on the left. The path soon offers a view across an in inlet on your right. Continue along the path soon walking beside a grassed area on your left. Reaching a three-way fingerpost, continue ahead over a small footbridge. Just after the last house on your left, turn left, cross a road, and take the signed footpath opposite. The enclosed path soon leads to Taylor's Lane (grid ref. SU812038).

Cross the lane and take the signed footpath opposite. The path leads across a field to cross a drainage ditch. Turn right and after a few metres turn left (signed path) and follow a track along the left-hand side a field. Reaching a house, the path loops to the right of the house and continues to the end of the field. Pass through a gap in a hedge and follow an enclosed path to Old Park Lane. Cross straight over the lane and continue along the path to reach a fingerpost at a T-junction (grid ref. SU829037). Turn right for 300 metres to the next fingerpost and turn left. The path soon reaches an area of scrub after which the path turns north (left) and runs beside Fishbourne Chaneel. The onward path soon reaches the sea wall from where the view includes Chichester Cathedral. Reaching another fingerpost, turn right down steps and follow the path across the reedbeds over two bridges to exit onto Mill Lane (grid ref. SU838045).

Turn left and continue to the A259. Turn left and continue for 650 metres and turn left into Old Park Lane. (If you wish to visit the Roman Palace, turn right along Station Road 250 metres from Mill Lane.) Follow Old Park Lane until it bends left where you continue ahead onto a signed track. Walk ahead with trees on your right and keep ahead at the next fingerpost. The route continues ahead soon passing glasshouses on your right. Walk ahead to reach Walton Lane (grid ref. SU814440). Continue ahead for 450 metres to reach the Berkeley Arms. Just before the telephone box, tur left down an enclosed path. Go straight across Fairfield Road on the continuing path which leads into a residential road. Walk ahead and turn right into Harbour Road which leads to the waterfront in Bosham. Bear right and retrace your steps to the start. Tio visit the harbour and church, continue ahead when you reach Bosham Lane. Both are a short walk away.
