A circular walk from the shores of Talybont Reservoir across upland moorland to the summit of Waun Rydd. The route climbs to the minor summit of Allt Lwyd before heading northwest along an airy ridge between two valleys to reach the upland moor and the summit of Waun Rydd from where a short diversion takes you to the escarpment with a view to Pen y Fan. The descent passes impressive Carn Pica before descending back to the start.

The start is a car park on the shores of Talybont Reservoir (grid ref. SO099197) situated about three kilometres south of Talybont-on-Usk. After parking cross the road to a track opposite. Follow the track uphill into open access land. The path runs roughly parallel to plantations on your left. Reaching the end of the trees the path heads up to the summit of Allt Lwyd (654 m). The onward path descends northwest and crosses a narrow ridge before climbing steadily onto the moorland plateau.

Reaching the path coming in from Carn Pica on your left, bear right and continue to the edge of the north facing escarpment. Bear left along the escarpment a short way to get the best view west to Fan y Big, Cribyn and Pen y Fan. After enjoying the view retrace your steps to the path you arrived from, and bear slightly left up to the summit of Waun Rydd (769 m). with its small rocky cairn (grid ref. SO062206). To start the descent, return to the ascent path and head southeast to reach the sandstone Carn Pica from where a view north to the Usk Valley can be enjoyed.

Descend steeply to the east and follow the undulating crest of the ridge with a brief ascent over the minor summit of Twyn Du. The path then descends steeply again heading for the corner of a small plantation in line with the reservoir dam. Cross a stile by a gate to join a clear track. Reaching a pair of gates turn right onto a bridleway (grid ref. SO101207). Pass several; farm buildings and approaching a farm bear slightly left passing the farm on your right. Stay on the bridleway and continue to a road (grid ref. SO100199). Turn right across the bridge and return to the car park.
