This linear walk follows a section of the 46-mile Chesterfield canal which was opened in 1777 and provided Chesterfield with access to River Trent at Skelwith. Nicknamed the 'Cuckoo Cut' (cut is local word for canal) the long-distance trail follows the canal between Worksop and Kiveton Park using the hourly rail service. The canal is still under restoration with completion of the final nine-mile section Chesterfield planned for 2027 or soon after.
The walk starts from the small car park at Kiveton Park Station (grid ref. SK507825). Trains to Worksop take 11 minutes are the service is hourly. On arrival at Worksop exit the station by the level crossing and turn right along Carlton Road. Reaching the traffic lights, continue ahead across a road coming in from the left and then turn right cross main road and turn left. Cross the canal, continue past a row of shops and turn right down an alley to reach a large car park. Bear right across the car park and turn left along the canal tow path.
Continue with the canal on your right for 1.5 kilometres passing three locks. After another 700 metres and just before you reach Haggonfields Lock (grid ref. SK567802), cross the bridge to the far side ignoring the path continuing ahead at the bridge. The towpath continues with canal on your left until the end of the walk. You pass several more locks before crossing a bridge providing access to marina at Shireoaks. Just after the marina, the path climbs up to a road. Go straight across and rejoin the towpath. The next section of canal features 20 locks in 1.6 kilometres as the canal gains height and is known as the 'Devil’s Staircase'. Continue ahead for a further three kilometres until the tow path heads up a ramp to a road. Turn right to reach the station car park with the Station Pub close by.
Editor's Note: Parking at Kiveton Park and catching the train before starting the walk provides a more relaxing experience as you are not walking against the clock to catch a train.
