This walk uses sections of the Leicestershire Round footpath to explore the 'Langtons' and starts from Stonton Wyville, a small village 11 miles south-east of Leicester. Parking is available near the starting point or on the minor road used in the final stage of the walk ((see last paragraph of this description). After parking, taking care not to inconvenience residents, take the footpath by St Denys Church. Head left towards the hedge line. Follow the hedge and when you reach a yellow post go right and then take the stile into the next field. Walk up the slope, following the right-hand side of the hedgerow and when you see a gap in it switch to the left-hand side. Continue on this path until you come out in a courtyard and then the Melton Road at Tur Langton (grid ref. SP715946).
Turn left, go over the junction and then take the footpath soon afterwards on the right. Head diagonally left and when you see a stile, indicating another footpath coming in from your right, straighten up and aim directly across the field. Go over the stile and continue along with the hedgerow to you left. When it ends turn left and follow the hedgerow up another slope and continue along the headland to the right. When you see another footpath coming in from the right, go left and head towards the village of Church Langton. Walk into a small field, head right and then cross two stiles and you are in a small enclosure. Off to your right you will see another footpath sign, turn left and after finding the well-concealed footpath, to the left of the gate, come out again onto the Melton Road (grid ref. SP722931).
Cross the road into the farmyard and take the footpath to the right. Turn left and pass through several fields to come out on another road (grid ref. SP724931). Turn right and walk to the road junction. Take the footpath opposite and walk almost the length of the field before turning left into another field. Go past the cricket pitch and onto the driveway and out onto the road almost opposite the Bell Inn, East Langton (grid ref. SP726927).
Here you have a choice; turn left and walk up the road and take the footpath to the right through a badly overgrown alleyway. Once you reach its end, head diagonally slightly left towards the opposite side of the field and down a passageway until you reach a lane with a stile to the left. Otherwise turn right and take the left-hand fork followed by a left turn into the afore-mentioned lane. Once you have reached this point (grid ref. SP728925) walk straight ahead through the fields until you are close to the village of Thorpe Langton. At grid ref. SP738923 turn left into a lane and then right along a footpath leading past the church of St Leonard's. Turn left along Church Lane. Walk and continue to reach the Thorpe Langton road (grid ref. SP741925).
Turn right along the road and immediately left. Continue along a gravel track until you reach a stream (grid ref. SP743929). Take the right-hand bridge and continue to ascend gradually to the top of Langton Caudle at a height of 482 feet. Once you have reached the trig point continue past it and go left through a gate which is shortly followed by another gate. This will bring you onto the right-hand side of the hedgerow. Continue descending all the way until you reach a minor road (grid ref. SP737936). Turn right, go straight across the cross roads and you will be back at your starting point.
Note There is no direct bus route, but using the ArrivaX3 Leicester to Market Harborough service (see timetable) and getting off at the A6/B6071 roundabout you can pick up The Leicestershire Round footpath which will take you to East Langton as a starting point. Doing this would add an extra 2.92 miles there and back.
