Codden Hill lies to the east of Bishop's Tawton village and provides excellent far-reaching views that include Dartmoor and Exmoor. This circular walk explores the beautiful Devon countryside to the north of Codden Hill visiting the villages of Landkey and Bishop's Tawton both of which have pubs for refreshments. The walk also uses a section of the Tarka Trail.

The start is the small car park towards the eastern end of Codden Beacon (grid ref. SS589294). This can be reached by taking the A377 south through Bishop's Tawton and turning left onto the minor road signed to Cobbaton. Continue along this road for 1.5 km to reach a side road on the right to Horswell. Ignore this road and continue ahead for another 600 metres to the next junction where the right-hand turn leads to Hayne. Turn left here up a gravel track to a small car park (grid ref. SS589294).

After parking take the track on the right-hand side of the parking area (when viewed form the approach) which is a continuation of the track used to access the parking area. This track descends across the northern slope of Codden Hill before bearing left to descend past a house on the left, from which point you join a tarmac lane. Continue to a junction. Bear left and almost immediately right onto Bableigh Road where you ignore the turning on the right. Continue ahead for 1.4 km to reach the road through Landkey (grid ref. SS590310) with the parish church opposite.

Turn left and after 100 metres turn left onto a signed footpath (Tarka Trail). Follow the clear footpath through a shallow valley to reach another lane after 700 metres. Turn left, cross a small stone bridge, and then turn right onto the Tarka Trail again (grid ref. SS586307). The onward path skirts Venn Quarries on your right before following a stream (on your right). The route then goes diagonally across a field to top corner before crossing another field to reach a stile onto Sentry Lane (grid ref. SS572301).

Bear right towards Bishop's Tawton. Reaching houses, Sentry Lane becomes Village Street. Continue ahead ignoring side roads on the right and left. You soon pass the front of the Chichester Arms on your left. Continue past the pub, remaining on Village Street, and continue to the A377. Turn left towards Exeter. Opposite the car showroom, turn left into the road signed to Cobbaton and almost immediately fork left up a signed footpath. The path (fence on your right) climbs steadily onto Codden Hill with views improving as you gain height. Reaching Codden Beacon you can enjoy the 360-degree panorama before continuing east down to the car park used at the start of the walk.
