Walk Route Description

The start is the small jetty in Salen on the A848 that runs along the east cost of the Isle of Mull. To locate the start go through Salen heading towards Tobermory. Park by the jetty just beyond the 30 mph sign.

After parking walk on towards Tobermory for a few yards and pass through a wicket gate on your left. This leads you on to a track that rises gently through mixed woodland. There are good views to your right over the Sound of Mull and Salen Bay where seals can often be seen.

The track leads across fields to Glenaros House. Follow it all the way to the farmstead where a succession of gates takes you past the farm buildings. Bear left through the last gate by Kates Cottage where there is a footpath notice to "Loch na Keal". Once through this gate, keep alongside the wall on your left, which runs uphill from the farm.

Ahead on the sky line you can see the remains of a ruined hill fort. Follow the track toward this, fording a burn, the Allt Chaisteal. The track goes to the right of the hill fort "Cnoc an Sroine". There are some remains of constructed walls but the main reason for the short detour to the fort is the spectacular view of Aros castle at the mouth of the river Aros. To the south you can also see the Ben More group and the shores of Loch na Keal and the large white shape of Knock house standing in the trees.

After taking in the view, rejoin the track and follow it to the left slightly as it bends round to the back of Braigh a Chore Mhoir upon which the fort stands . As you approach some conifers locate a footpath to your left. This takes you round the back of the fort and down towards Salen. Follow the path through the trees and onto the road from where it is a short walk back to the jetty.
