Skiddaw
Walking Guide and Walks

Skiddaw is the fourth highest mountain in the Lake District rising 931 metres above sea level. Often criticised for not having dramatic crags, its rounded shape offers excellent walking with grand views across Keswick and Derwentwater to most of the Lakeland summits. In addition to the east views extend to the Northern Pennines including might Cross Fell. To the north the panorama extends across the fells at the Back o' Skiddaw, the Solway Firth and the hills of Southern Scotland.

The easiest and most popular route of ascent starts from the car park at Underscar, which at nearly 1000 feet above sea level, provides a considerable saving in ascent. Another popular approach is from the west approaching the summit over Ullock Pike and along Longside Edge. Although longer and with more ascent this is probably considered as the connoisseurs' route.

Other summits in the group include Skiddaw Little Man, which can be included in the route of ascent from Underscar, and Lonscale Fell. The latter can provide excellent walking through the valley containing Glenderaterra Beck with views across the southern flank of neighbouring Blencathra.
