An excellent coastal walk from Solva to St Davids following the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. The route is easy to follow with clear waymarks and provides some fine views and interesting geology. The cost path is undulating with short ascent and descents with nothing too demanding. A bus runs parallel to the coast between Solva and St Davids. It is recommended you park at the end of the walk and catch the bus to the start as this allows a more leisurely walk with plenty of time to fully appreciate the many coastal features and explore Britain’s smallest city with its imposing cathedral.

The route starts from Solva harbour (grid ref. SM8472230. The Coastal Path follows the western side of the harbour and leads uphill to the cliff top offering an excellent view across Solva's sheltered harbour. As you make progress along the cliffs there is a distant view of Ramsey Island, several points of geological interest including rock arches and excellent views along the cliffs.

Five kilometres from Solva you reach the popular beach of Caer Bwdy and just beyond a prominent headland with the small island of Penpleidian just offshore. The headland was the site of a fort although little evidence remains. Continue above the Caerfai Bay beach to reach a four-way finger past (grid ref. SW760244). Fork half right off the Coast Path and walk up to a car park. Exit the parking area and walk north along a lane. After just under a kilometre, turn left along Bryn Road. Continue ahead to reach the High Street in St Davids.

This walk can be extended by starting from Newgale – see Walk 2969.

Further Information

Pembrokeshire Coast Walking

Walking in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is Britain's only truly coastal national park. Rimmed by a spectacular waterscape of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches and wooded estuaries, the land rises to wild inland hills. This environment is a place of sanctuary for wildlife who share the landscape that has been shaped by many people over the centuries. Tombs and castles, crosses and cottages, quarries and quays are all reminders of man's endeavours, which remains a working landscape. Inland the Preseli Hills offer excellent walking across the moorland ridge.
