Croker Hill lies just outside the boundaries of the Peak District National Park and offers wide ranging views across the Cheshire Plain to the north. The route follows a section of the Gritstone Way over Croker Hill and across Sutton Common. The return follows a bridleway across the eastern flank of Croker Hill to return to the start.

A small layby (grid ref. SJ939697) on Hollin Lane about 500 metres north of the Ryles Arms Pub. After parking walk north along the lane and turn left to follow the Gritstone Trail. The path starts to climb immediately beside a small wood on your right to pass to the left of Foxbank Farm. A grassy track continues ahead swinging right and then left. Reaching a wall lined with trees (grid ref. SJ933697) continue through the wall and turn left.

Continue south along a rising path with a wall on your left. The path soon passes between walls and enters a small field. Head half left and turn right through the wall. The onward path continues with a wall on your left to the end of the field. Bear left and then right to continue south. Maintain direction along the wall with Croker Hill ahead. A track on the other side of the wall continues over the hill and is later joined as you near the transmitter on Sutton Common. Pass the BT Tower, two sheds on the right and just before Lingerds Farm turn left to continue along the Gritstone Way which descends across fields to reach a track. Bear right and follow the track to the A54 (grid ref. SJ940674).

Turn left along the A54 for 150 metres using the grass verge wherever possible and take the first signed footpath on the left. Pass through the kissing gate and walk half right across a field. Cross a drive and maintain direction downhill through a kissing gate across fields. The route briefly follows a track before veering left to follow path through a gate to join a farm track. Bear left and follow the signed route through Higher Pethills Farmyard. Exit through a metal gate and follow the bridleway down through Rossen Clough After passing Civit Hills Farm on your left the route joins an access track (grid ref. SJ938688). Continue ahead down the track which continues down the valley soon becoming a tarmac lane. Continue to reach Hollin Lane and turn right back to the start.
